Since identification of supervision as a distinct professional practice, supervision training distinct from clinical practice has become a priority. This development has been propelled by the adoption of Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology (American Psychological Association, 2014; 2015) and regulatory, Supervision Guidelines for Education and Training leading to Licensure as a Health Service Provider (Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards, 2015). This workshop presents the learning cycle in competency-based clinical supervision (Falender & Shafranske, 2017) as an approach to enhance supervision effectiveness and to facilitate the supervisee's development of clinical competence. The presentation provides an overview of clinical supervision with an emphasis on the learning cycle, best practices, emphasizing reflective practice, and includes an update on California regulations in respect to clinical supervision. The presentation includes lecture, discussion, small group activities, and analysis of videotape clinical and supervisory interactions.
This workshop prepares participants to:
  • Identify 3 competencies involved in clinical supervision
  • Identify the components and processes comprising the clinical supervision learning cycle
  • Identify 2 best practices, including ways to enhance reflective practice
  • Describe 2 practical ways to enhance respect for individual differences and multicultural competence
  • Describe 3 elements in effective feedback and establishing performance improvement plans drawing upon a competency-based approach
  • Describe 2 approaches to fulfill ethical and legal responsibilities involved in clinical supervision and to address problems in professional competence
