Edward Shafranske, Ph.D.
This workshop provides an update to the practice of clinical supervision directly drawn from Falender and Shafranske's 2nd edition of Clinical Supervision: A Competency-Based Approach (APA, May 2021). The core principles, best practices, and current research in clinical supervision will be presented with special attention to the learning cycle, multicultural competence, tele supervision, personal reactivity when treating trauma, advances in assessment supervision, evaluation and routine monitoring, and emerging developments in professional practice. A review of California regulations specific to supervision and SPE will be presented.
This workshop prepares participants to:
• Identify the components and processes comprising the clinical supervision learning
cycle.
• Describe the use of one supervision guideline to anchor multiculturally-sound telesupervision
practice.
• Identify one technique to give feedback in a competence frame.
• Identify two factors that may lead to alliance strains.
• Describe two practical ways to enhance respect for individual differences and multicultural
competence.
• Outline steps to increase likelihood supervisees disclose personal reactivity/countertransference.
