Latino Heritage Month Speaker Series 2022
Please join us as we celebrate the first annual Latino Heritage Month Speaker Series 2022. We start off the month on Friday, September 16 at 5:30 pm PST with our keynote speaker, Dr. Aldo Boitano from Chile. He is a graduate of our EDOL program and will be gracing us with his talk on discovering the Latino influence and beyond.

A Journey of Discovering Latino Influence in the World and Beyond
Friday, September 16 | 5:30 pm PST/8:30 pm EST - Dr. Aldo Boitano
Dr. Aldo Boitano works with individuals and organizations so they can make an impact in the world and elevate their leadership. In this event, he will discuss the importance of Latino leadership in science, business, technology, and diverse cultural influences impacting the world today. Dr. Boitano shares his experience in leading businesses and sustainability drive initiatives while contributing to the intellectual and cultural life from his experiences across four continents. Additionally, Dr. Boitano graduated from GSEP with an EdD in Organizational Leadership.

Monday, September 19 | 5:30 pm PST/8:30 pm EST - Panel Series with Dr. Gabriella Miramontes, Dr. Norma Guzman, Dr. Linda Guzman, Moises Olavarrieta, Suelen Schneider Demaria, and Sofia Henriquez Urbina

From the Sugarcane Fields of Jalisco to Becoming Dr. James
Friday, September 23 | 5:30 pm PST/8:30 pm EST - Dr. James Oliva
Join us for an informal, casual, and relaxing virtual fireside chat with Dr. James Oliva. Dr. Oliva will talk about his journey from the sugarcane fields of Jalisco, Mexico where his family immigrated from, to coming to the U.S. for a better life. He will talk about the importance of mentorship, taking risks, and following your intuition. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your own stories as well.

Join us for an informal, casual, and relaxing virtual fireside chat with Dr. Ricardo Vigil. Dr. Vigil will talk about his journey and the successes, challenges, and obstacles he experienced as a Latin American born right here in Inglewood, CA. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and share your own stories as well.
A Mexicana's Journey: Dean Sponsored Lunch and Learn Event (in-person at West LA Campus)
Friday, September 30 | 12:30 pm PST/3:30 pm EST - Dr. Reyna Garcia-Ramos
Dr. García Ramos will share her journey from her immigrant Mexicano roots to her career in higher education. She will share her story about struggles and motivations to continue to pursue the work she carries out daily. She lives by the mantra to provide others "with the teacher/mentor they needed" to succeed as a bilingual/bicultural Latinx in the US.

Faith, Family…and Everything Else: A Journey in Unlearning

There is no question that the current times have elucidated, in profound ways, divided and divisive relationships across many in the United States and Internationally. As Dr. Gallardo reflects on Latinx Heritage Month, he is reminded of both the strengths, values, and legacies of those who came before us, and also the continued need to self-reflect, revisit, and unlearn in order to create a better future for those that follow. Latinx communities have much to offer our communities, which he hopes to illustrate through his own journey, which has been a journey of relying heavily on Catholicism and Familia. Dr. Gallardo is a Professor of Psychology and Director of Aliento, The Center for Latinx Communities at Pepperdine University. He teaches courses on multicultural and social justice, advocacy, and Latinx professional practice issues.
