Jennifer Miyake-Trapp, EdD Appointed Assistant Dean of Learning Design and Technology

We are pleased to announce Jennifer Miyake-Trapp as our inaugural Assistant Dean of Learning Design and Technology for the Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP). She will begin her role on February 15, 2024.

Dr. Miyake-Trapp has served as a professor of education at Pepperdine since 2017. She is a respected instructor who earned the prestigious Howard A. White Award for Teaching Excellence in 2020 and who also has eleven years of K-12 teaching experience prior to joining Pepperdine University.

An expert in instructional design, she has developed 24 courses at GSEP and collaborated with faculty and staff in the education and psychology divisions to develop, implement, and support online and hybrid courses. She has engaged in extensive Program Development for the MA TESOL, MS in Leadership Suite, and Doctoral Virtual International Trips. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Miyake-Trapp helped to create Optimal Engagement Immersion Pedagogy, a blend of technology enabling simultaneous synchronous teaching and learning from multiple physical locations, and supported local schools in adopting this technology to serve diverse communities. She currently leads the Virtual Initiatives Team (VIT) at GSEP, supporting online and hybrid learning through instructional design, curriculum development, and hybrid-format school events. She has published and presented her work on instructional designer-faculty partnerships, belonging and technology, assessment and instructional design, effective online pedagogy, and learning experience design.

Dr. Miyake-Trapp has served as the chair of the MS in Leadership suite of programs and the MA in TESOL program. She has also served on numerous committees at the school and university levels, including the Rank, Tenure, and Promotion committee and University Academic Council, and she currently serves on the Provost’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence, TechLearn University Faculty Steering Committee, and the Educational Technology Users group.

Dr. Miyake-Trapp has demonstrated her commitment to leadership and her vision for building sustainable education, promoting rich learning experiences, and centering belonging for all students at GSEP. Her experience in instructional design and educational technology will help guide us toward future growth in the online learning space.
