Graduate School of Education Honors Veterans Day
In partnership with Pepperdine Veterans Affairs, the Pepperdine Graduate School of
Education (GSEP) is pleased to kick off Veterans Week starting Monday, November 8th,
with our #Jamii Career Webinar series for our military-connected community. Pepperdine
celebrates and recognizes the military-connected communities and all that they have
done for this country.
History of Veterans Day
In November 1919, Woodrow President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day, which would become Veterans Day with these words:
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…" (Library of Congress, 2021).
Ways to Support Veterans
- Learn more about the history of Veterans Day through this short video.
- Send a message of thanks and support to service members or provide them a gift from the USO Wishbook.
- Give to the USO to support its mission of strengthening the military by connecting them to family, home, and country.
- Volunteer with the USO to serve local military communities.
- Donate to GSEP Scholarships for Military Veterans, such as the Curtice & Evelyn Booth Veterans Endowed Scholarship, Waves Got Your Six Scholarship, and Land of the Free Foundation
Pepperdine’s Veterans Services
For more than 70 years, Pepperdine has supported veterans and their family members with services and resources that build community, engage alumni, and provide employment, community service, and mentorship opportunities for all military-connected students. The University is recognized by U.S. News & World Report for its service to veterans. Pepperdine is an active participant in the Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program, commonly known as the Yellow Ribbon Program, and offers tuition support to Yellow Ribbon-eligible students, most of whom are provided priority registration.
Pepperdine also offers support services ranging from providing benefits counseling to veterans, encouraging involvement in student organizations, and funding through additional scholarships like the Ahmanson Veteran Scholarship Initiative, Waves Got Your Six Scholarship from the Land of the Free Foundation, and the Curtice and Evelyn Booth Veterans Endowed Scholarship.
Pepperdine University's motto is "Freely ye received, freely give." As we live this out, we want to give and support those who have freely given to us.
