Biography

Mrs. Michelle Matthews earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Southern California. She received her clinical license nine years ago and opened a private practice. She has fifteen years of experience working in the field of mental health with children, adolescents, couples, and families. Professor Matthews has experience working in many settings with diverse populations and diagnoses including private practice, nonprofit organizations, and county outpatient mental health clinics. Professor Matthews also has expertise in child abuse reporting, crisis intervention, and case management. She is passionate about helping clients through all phases of life issues, including family relational issues, intimate partner and relationship issues, and racial trauma. 

Additionally, she spent the past twelve years working with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, delivering mental health services to adults with severe and persistent mental illness while providing advocacy to mental health professionals addressing discrimination and equity in the workplace. She has served as a field instructor and provided clinical supervision to MSW and MFT students. She is currently part of a Senior Management team that analyzes and supports directly operated child outpatient clinics. 

Furthermore, she specializes in individual counseling and is currently working in private practice in addition to her faculty position. She helps adults working through the life transition of getting married, after marriage, struggling with adjustment, trust, infidelity, communication, financial discrepancies, and divorce. In her spare time, Professor Matthews volunteers at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and is an active member of her church.
