Doctoral Candidate In Educational Leadership, Administration, And Policy Honored As Option Schools Principal Of The Year For ACSA Region 16

Simone Charles HeadshotCongratulations to Simone Charles, Doctoral Candidate in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy (ELAP), who has recently been honored as Option Schools Principal of the Year for ACSA Region 16. Having undertaken the responsibility of being the ACSA Region 16 Cultural Proficiency Director and Council Representative for Educational Option Schools, Ms. Charles works to bring innovative instructional programs to Option Schools students, such as her collaboration with the UCLA Bruins Medical Review. 

The lasting impact of a solid education is paramount to Ms. Charles. Drawing on her own experiences in school as a minority female, Ms. Charles is familiar with the challenges many students face. She provides varied learning opportunities that engage and inspire students to manage their challenges and pursue higher education. Continuing her life’s work to support diverse students, Ms. Charles focuses on racial and gender inequality within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Her goal is to expand the trajectory of females of color in STEM and enable them to pursue higher learning opportunities.

Simone Charles holds a B.A. in Communications, an MA in Bilingual Multicultural Education from California State University Dominguez Hills, and is currently a doctoral student in Educational Leadership and Policy (ELAP) at Pepperdine University, The Graduate School of Education and Psychology. Ms. Charles was honored as one of Councilman Curren Price’s 2017 SHeros for her accomplishments working with minority students, and she presided over the Council of Black Administrators (COBA) as president from 2016-2018. A committed educator for close to 30 years, Ms. Charles’ achievements include serving as a Spanish language bilingual and primary language classroom teacher, mentor teacher, grade-level chair, and demonstration teacher. Her dedication to students culminated early in her career into being named Hawthorne School District Teacher of the Year. Now, as Principal of the Year, Ms. Charles continues to exhibit her love of education and the endless possibilities it holds for students.
