Kevin Wong HeadshotKevin Wong, PhD, Chair of the MA in TESOL program and Assistant Professor of Education at GSEP, has recently published three articles in TESOL Journal, Computer Assisted Language Learning Journal, and the Asia Society Center for Global Education.

In TESOL Journal, Wong’s article examined how preschool-aged children might incidentally learn vocabulary in a new language through media environments. Examining word learning opportunities in Sesame Street (Sesame Workshop), Bubble Guppies (PBS Kids), and Martha Speaks (Nickelodeon), Wong found that media programs with relatively explicit and intentional exposure to vocabulary words scaffolded learning better than incidental exposure.

In Computer Assisted Language Learning Journal, Wong’s study investigated how four pedagogical supports in educational media differentially promoted word learning in a new language. Working with emerging bilingual preschoolers, Wong found that certain supports were more helpful than others, which was moderated by English language proficiency, suggesting the potential of media to accelerate learning for those less proficient in the target language.

Lastly, Wong worked with a team from the Chinese Early Language and Immersion Network at Asia Society to conduct a nationally-representative survey of Chinese immersion preschools in the United States. His co-authored Brief, “Surveying Chinese Immersion Preschool Programs and Teachers in the United States: 2020 - 2021,” outlines trends at the school and classroom levels and was featured by the Asia Society Center for Global Education.
