MFT Licensure

The Marriage and Family Therapy track leads to a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. The program is designed to lead to eligibility for an Associate Marriage and Family Therapy (AMFT) license within California. States typically have additional post license requirements to become eligible for an independent practice license, including additional hours under supervision and testing. In California the independent practice license is Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), other states may have a different license name.

Pepperdine University has regional accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). States that require a specialized accreditor may have additional requirements for licensure.

The table below provides a state by state breakdown of comparable licenses, including a determination of eligibility for licensure. This information provided is designed as a baseline determination of whether the program meets individual state specific requirements. Other licenses may be more applicable and/or require additional standards. Licensure requirements and appropriate pathways are subject to change and may differ based on individual student backgrounds, including coursework taken outside the scope of the program. Students should do their own due diligence and determine the appropriate pathway and license type for themselves.
