Psy.D. Alumna Develops Program to Support Social Graces for Autistic Teens
Alumna of the doctoral program in clinical psychology, Liz Laugeson, has gained great attention for her work with autistic teens. Laugeson is the director of The Help Group - UCLA Autism Research Alliance where she co-developed a parent-assisted social skills intervention for teens with autism. The unique program, called PEERS, helps adolescents to adjust to life in middle school and beyond.

Organizational Leadership Alumnus Secured a Gift of $70 Million to California Community College Students.
Tod Burnett, alumnus of the Organizational Leadership doctoral program and Vice Chancellor of the California Community Colleges System Office, oversaw the procurement of a $70 million gift from the Bernard Osher Foundation to support private scholarships for California's community college students. The commitment was made as part of the Osher Initiative for California's community college students and represents the single largest gift to a community college system in the nation and one of the largest gifts ever made to higher education.

Eric Hamilton, Associate Dean of Education represented the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology at the 2008 Next Generations Environment conference of the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) agency of the United Kingdom government. Educational Technology Student to Serve on Curriculum Panel for Adult Education
Lani Fraizer, a current student in the Educational Technology program at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, has been invited to serve on the expert panel for the Trade Advisory Committee for Roosevelt Community Adult School, which is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The panel will review curriculum, current industry trends, employment opportunities, as well as identify necessary technology skills students need for employability.

Cross Cultural Conflict Study Receives Award
Doug Leigh, Associate Professor of Education at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, received the 2008 Excellence for the Future Award from the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction. Awarded for stellar achievement in the study of cross cultural conflict, the award is the result of a paper Leigh wrote titled "A Perfect Storm: Norwegian Sailors and Their American Wives."

Supporting Early Childhood Learning
Cara Garcia, Education Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP), served on a panel at the first annual meeting of the Thrive by Five organization in the state of Washington.
The panel's theme was Reading the World and Reading the Word, spring boarding from a recent book by Catherine Snow, et al. Thrive by Five is a non-profit agency that supports early childhood learning and is supported by State and nonprofit funds. Dr. Graciela Italiano-Thomas, a GSEP alumna of the Organizational Leadership doctoral program currently serves as President and CEO.

Doug Leigh, Associate Professor of Education, has co-authored a new text titled, The Assessment Book: Applied Strategic Thinking and Performance Improvement Through Self-Assessments. Leigh details seven self-assessments designed to help the reader define the issue of "what to accomplish" before deciding "how to accomplish it." With these seven assessments, one can collect, analyze and interpret the data necessary to confirm suspicions before making recommendations.

The Influence of a Doctoral Program on Students' Personal and Professional Lives
A doctoral education can impact students in numerous ways. Some find the challenges more than they expected, but most experience significant intellectual and personal growth over the course of their studies. How individuals manage their personal and professional lives often influences their successful completion of all degree requirements within an optimal time-period.
Charles Fischer, Michael A. Moodian, and Frank Nainoa, doctoral students in the Organizational Leadership (EDOL) program at the Irvine Campus, were interested in the effect that their EDOL studies had on their classmates' personal and professional lives. As a part of a class assignment at the end of their second year at Pepperdine, they chose to qualitatively analyze, via textual analysis, the class's responses questions regarding the doctoral program.

Educational Technology Student Receives $10,000 Grant for His "Rock the Docs" Documentary Curriculum
Brett Schneider, a student in the Educational Technology doctoral program, was one of 50 selected to receive a $10,000 grant from Best Buy Electronics, for his "Rock the Docs" Documentary Curriculum. Schneider, who teaches technology at The Institute for Collaborative Education in New York City, created an original series of units to teach 6-12 grade students digital filmmaking and non-fiction reporting and documentary skills. Students engage in identifying issues, researching their topics, writing original copy, producing segments, directing the filming and digitally editing the videos in their school's technology lab.

Simpson, will be awarded the California Psychological Association's Silver Psi Award at the Association's annual convention on Thursday, April 3, 2008 in Anaheim, California. The award honors psychologists who have made a significant and sustained contribution to the Association.
